My life...

Painting helps me understand. I walk through life with eyes and ears wide open, curious about everything and accessible for everyone. I like something or I don't but, I always try to look and listen. I was born in the middle of a gruesome war, on December 31st, 1942 . At that age my mothers breast was more important to me than the onmarch of nazism and this time must have shaped me... My childhood was tender and soft among the smells of the orange trees and the arabian fields of Algeria. This word "Algeria" lies within me and these days is fraught with hopeless nostalgia. My small school, my arabian, spanish and french friends and me living peacefully in great freedom, carefree and filled with happiness. Then came the sudden departure to Paris when my father felt war was imminent. Paris and its "banlieue" (suburb) in the north and its smell of cabbage. The grey, the crampted conditions, the blue school uniform with the white collar, bad grades apart from the one in art. Then came the time of "Decorative Art". Nice and its "galets" (pebbles), its "pan banias" and me with my 20 years that made me feel as if I had all the power in the world. 1967 with my diploma in my hand and burning all the bridges behind me I went to Berlin. This city drew me... an island, my island. It was there where I would maybe learn to understand what couldn't be understood.
